If you watch PBS there is a show I believe is called Taiwan NOW, they often aired segments about the Hakka which the Taiwanese celebrated. Rather than "river pirates" as ddd describes them since there are no long rivers on Taiwan, I gathered the Hakka are more akin to an indigenous people of Taiwan.
