Costco is the same way here and I never hear of any thievery going on. It used to bother me having to show my receipt as I leave.  meh  ok  fine  Just don't judge me on all the Kirkland Irish Whiskey bottles clanking around.

The majority of the time they find an item missing from your cart or a double charge.
They are saving you from their own thievery.

I wouldn't mind if there was no line to get out and they actually checked the shopping cart to the receipt.  Most stores do it right, the doors are 3 steps from the cash register and they don't need anyone checking receipts.

I saw an article once saying the real reasons Costco checks your receipt is to make sure you weren't overcharged and that you didn't forget anything.  Not sure if I believe that, but I think they know they lose much more inventory out the back door than out the front.

Interesting factoid, not sure if this is a state rule or federal, but to get a license to sell alcohol or prescription drugs they have to agree to allow sales of those items to the general public.  The idea being they might be the only ones in the area selling them.  Technically, those shoppers never signed the agreement to show their receipts.
