If you have to corner me, I would say my favorite combination right now are mini humbuckers on a Firebird.

I also heard a recording with a Gretsch equipped with those jumbotron pickups... I remember liking that a lot, I was real responsive when I would doodle on it.

As my tinnitus has expanded, I do find the thinner (not brighter or glassier) pickups, for some reason, sound better to me. Psychoacoustics maybe?

My 80 Tobacco Burst Les Paul Deluxe came with Mini-Hums. I prefer them to the normal humbuckers. The tone, the clarity, and the way they cut through while still having the warmth of hums. That fucker has been everywhere and still has all the original parts.

I just don't like this. I WANT to mic a nice sounding amp and plug a guitar of choice in and "keep it real"
The fun in finding the best mic, best cab, ETC and proceeding from there is what "recording" is.
Everybody with half an ear can hear the synthetic sounds that go with all that other poop.
It is a sad thing that I am in the minority with this.

Keep in mind that the song may not be your favorite song amongst the same songs on studio albums, but rather a combination of the song as a live performance. Make sense?  I pick Makin' Love because of its unbridled energy live. That said, it is not my favorite "song" of all the songs on that particular record.  A combo of a killer tune in a live situation.
