BEST WESTERNS
« on: August 22, 2023, 01:11:39 PM »
I looked. I could not find a "western" movie category. That seems odd to me.

The Hitchcock mania has me watching older movies now, and since most western are in that category (older) they fall right in my line of thinking/viewing.  I'll admit that I am a novice when it comes to the genre so I would like to see what you cow-folk can add to this.

I have never watched One Upon A Time In The West, but I think it's Hang 'Em High time I did!  <<-- See what I did there?  ;) :P

Dude. It's a must! As good an opening scene as a movie could have.

They Died With Their Boots On is a fave of mine. A Little thetrical license here but to this very day, the 7th Calvary is known as Garryowen.

If you need a smile, Trinity Is Still My Name has about the best poker scene in a Western. It's a fiver in length but worth it.

The quick draw scene ain't bad either.

5 Card Stud with Dean Martin, Robert Mitchum, Roddy McDowell and Yaphet Kotto is a good one too.

HA!!  I knew that would eventually be thrown in here.  ;D

I will definitely look at the suggestions above. The Sergio Leone trilogy is something I would like to do all in one day but time and schedule will not allow for that. 5 Card Stud looks good!

Speaking of Best Westerns, this is where I stay when I go to New Jersey for the speed bag annuals every July. Room 126 every time.  ;D

I watched Clint Eastwood's The Unforgiven last night.  Awful.  I kept hoping maybe the ending would somehow reward me for sitting all the way through it.  Nope.

Worst movie I've seen for awhile, they should have called it The Unforgivable.

I saw you post the thread I wanted to do the hotel joke too but I just didn't have the heart to derail your thread on the first reply  ;D

To be honest, Westerns is not my genre of choice but I definitley liked the 2010 version of "True Grit" with Jeff Bridges. I should give the John Wayne version a watch

Now you have to make the Best Western joke you planned on.

A few that I would recommend and rewatch myself.

High Noon (1952)
Shane (1953)
The Wild Bunch (1969)
Bad Day at Black Rock (1955)
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1947)
The Ox-Bow Incident (1943)

Oh, for fuck's sake, what's wrong with you? It's one of the best films ever made. What ending were you expecting? It had been unremittingly bleak up to that point, did you think it was going to close with a song and dance number? It's one of those films that you need to go back and re-watch several times before you really get the hang of it anyway. Eastwood, Hackman, Harris, Freeman - they're all great in it, Hackman above all. It's an anti-Western, it shows how it must have been like for these people, it's not some romanticised view of the old west. People carve up whores and get riddled full of bullets while in the shithouse. Do you like anything, you miserable old bastard?

There's always The Outlaw starring Howard Hughes' obsession with Jane Russell's breasts.

I will never forget what Mother Teresa told me on her death bed - "Westerns are as gay as the men who watch them"
She was an angry bitch but she nailed that one on the head.

Gun The Man Down (1956) starring Angie Dickinson in her first leading lady role.  James Arness is backing.

Rio Bravo (1959) starring Angie Dickinson, the prettiest thing to ever come out of North Dakota, lesser roles filled by the likes of John Wayne, Dean Martin, Walter Brennan, Ricky Nelson, and a bunch of others.

Sam Whiskey (1969) starring the lovely Angie Dickinson.  Backups in this one: Burt Reynolds, Clint Walker, and Ossie Davis.

Death Hunt (1981) starring Angie Dickinson, fellow actors include Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, Carl Weathers, and more.
