The troubles with Win11
« on: January 14, 2026, 02:50:19 AM »
I've been bothered by reports about Win11 incorporating AI, taking screenshots and sending them off, and just a general slowness.  I dual booted with Linux Mint then installed all the Ubuntu Studio stuff over it.  I haven't gotten to video or audio production in any meaningful way yet, but for normal office stuff I couldn't be happier.
Anyway, here's an article about the reasons for Win11 troubles.  Looks like the company  began to view engineers and the product as costs not assets.

There are many more troubles for W11 than just that. Mass exodus to Linux is underway. There is also a thing with LG TV's now with W11 software installed that cannot be removed.

Will do tonight.
Looking forward......
Staying tuned........

Popcorn.......?

When I started my career in the late 80's we did just about everything here in RTP.  The hardware design, the firmware, the system software and the manufacturing.  Then they moved the manufacturing to eastern Europe and from there to Mexico.  We also were all regular, US based employees based here.

At times there would be some headcount crunches which they would soften by using US based contract employees. Once the crunch was over, the contractors would be reassigned or not renewed when their contract was up.  This worked out ok but then the White Shoe Boys came up with the idea that they could layoff the regular US based employees and replace them with the contractors.  This was problematic in that once a contractor was trained and up to speed they would simply leave for a better gig.  Some of the contract employees were really good but there was no viable mechanism to hire them as regulars.  Also some of them were pretty wild.  We had one guy that they hired pretty much because he used to play cornerback for the Redskins.  He had a nice resume but it was relevant to the work we were doing - but NFL guy?  Hire 'em.   After he had been there awhile we had issues where memory, hard drives and other parts would go missing from the systems in the lab.  Got to be a big issue so they setup a sting operation and it turns out the ex-NFL guy was swiping anything that wasn't nailed down to fuel his drug problem.   We had another wild-eyed, rough individual that didn't show up to work one Friday without explaination.  Monday morning rolls around and he comes in with "Ain't ya'll gonna congratulate me?"   We are like - "No - why".  "I met a chick at the Your Place or Mine [a local dive] and we went down to South of the Border and got married."  South of the Border is place in South Carolina just south of the stateline: https://www.sobpedro.com/
Not exactly a prime nuptial spot.  Then we had the dude that brought whores into the office.  He was working 2nd shift support and went to the Wendy's for his lunch break.  Picked up two ladies of the evening [Not sure what prostitute selection is like in the Durham Wendy's at 10PM on weeknight - pretty grim I'd image] and brought them back to the office for a tryst.  Came time to pay up and the dude refused, so the ladies being professionals pulled the fire alarm.  Security earned their money that night.

Then the offshoring started.  Instead of hiring US based contractors they started firing here and hiring in Poland.  This worked pretty darn well. Smarty people those Poles.  However they were deemed too expensive so it was time for the Boys from Brazil.  More US guys fired and replaced by Brazilians.  Then they purged all of them and moved most of the work to China.  Couple of years back, our firm closed down everything in China and the work was split between Africa and India.  As much as they wanted it too - the African thing didn't even really get off the ground and India won out big time.  India, India, India.  There are only three US based people in my department left.  Some of the Indians are really good and some are horrible.  By the time you figure which is which, the good ones have boogied.

Now there is the AI stuff taking root.  At first it was just supposed to help us with testing and infrastructure type tasks.  Now it is putting in fixes.  I just watched a guy push a fix yesterday right in front of me from the AI.  Didn't even review what the thing changed.

When I first started there was real pride in our and if we shipped something, It By God worked.  Now it is just push the stuff and hope it doesn't explode.  We are all so worn out and discouraged.

Like TV news.  Starting in the 80s the accountants began to view reporters and photographers as expenses rather than assets.  Experienced hands were pushed out for 24-year old blonde girls with 1-2 years experience. The accountants said to get stories from the AP wire.  Then by the 2000s they were objecting to paying for AP.  The result is the 27-year old reporters who know nothing as Obama's Ben Rhodes complained about.  And newspapers that are no more than newsletters.  Management forgot that what the had to sell was local news.
Merry Christmas - Nice things, and posts, are nicer than nasty things.

Ugh. That really speaks to many of places today.

On a slightly related note, the things (patterns) I saw happening in the high-rise in my 3 years in Denver made me so glad not to be one of them. That company was ruthless. They would let go an entire floor of newbies after their first year unless they showed great promise, only to replace them with hoards of new faces from India. All the newbies are let go just before raise time as all the replacements are just glad to be there. Year after year the Americans were squeezed out from the ground levels. It sucked personally because in my line I would develop a very friendly rapport with many of them and then.. they're gone, Jim!

To windows 11, the company I worked for is switching back to 10 after spending a lot of $$$ on switching over companywide. That's a whole other thing there. The standard software/s used in that industry were not functioning well with 11. I have seen a lot of videos on YT of similar experiences had by many companies having to revert back to 10.

@JUAN You have windows 11, correct?

@Walks_At_Night You have two dogs, correct?

@Smokin Hot Bob Have you noticed that season 2 of Landman is a tad lacking compared to season1?

I love Win11.  It forced me to get a new machine and throw my 2008 machine with the dead 6 on the keyboard in the garage.  Gee, this sure seems fast.  It comes right on, and the keyboard even has a light or something so I can type in the dark.

Correct. The Lads. Defenders of the Realm against Squirrel, Bird, Delivery Dude, Rubbish Men and Apache Helicopters.

They are small and a study in contrasts.  One is as @bateman would say "A dim bulb" and the other is clever.  One is lazy and the other is an amazing athlete for its size.  One will sit with you for as long as you want and the other only a few minutes because he has shit to do.  One is leery while the other has the balls of a Lion and has taken on Possum and Snapping Turtle.  After twenty plus years of being dogless, I'm having a ball.  Will post a pic later.

You like your new keyboard and the computer itself. Not W11. At first I didn't mind 11.

Rubbish men? You're sort of out on the edge of town or even further aren't you? Unless I am not understanding what rubbish men are.

Yeah - on the outskirts of a town of a thousand people.  We have a dude that swings by and picks up the rubbish and takes it to the dump.
If I had a truck, I'd do it myself but that is another story.................

Well yeah, the point was if MS hadn't stopped supporting 10, I wouldn't have gotten around to getting a new laptop and would still be using the old pos.

Speaking of pos, MS has always been a buggy bloatware surveillance tool so what else is new.  If I used it for anything other than email, websites, and a few spreadsheets I'd run Linux instead.
