In September,1976 they lost an F-14 off the deck of the Kennedy in the North Sea. I happened to be pretty close with a bunch of Seals that got ripped away from what they were doing to go make sure that the Ruskies didn’t grab it off the seabed before we could find it. The fire control radar and the Phoenix missiles were the Navy’s pride and joy.

Ironically we never hit anything we fired our Phoenix missiles at before they were retired. The Iranians had much better luck with them than we did.

In 1980, the Soviets lost one of their Yak-38 STO/VL fighters into the sea off one of their cruiser carriers.  I was working at Langley AFB at the time, with our USN colleagues a bit further south in Norfolk and Virginia Beach.   Lots of talk then about recovering the Yak, but I don't know if we did.  If they did, I'm sure they were both disappointed and relieved.

That's impressive, low and slow is stall territory.  Would have been interesting to have been on that flight as a passenger.
