Years ago I was in Hong Kong, I'm no expert but it seemed like I saw styles and colors that I hadn't seen before. 

Back in the US, 18 months later, I finally start to see these same styles and use of colors - which I'd completely forgotten about.  I assumed the fashions started in East Asia, moved on to Europe, then the East Coast, and finally arrived in California.  HK was (is?) known for it's shopping and inexpensive knock-offs

Does this sound right (for the pre-digital world)?

YES!!! Fishnets go with everything. I don't consider them slutty at all, though I suppose it depends on if you're using them for good or evil.  ;) One of my first posts on this thread was about fishnets.  :D

That was def the case for the flow from western Europe to the Eastern US then Western US in the early aughts. It is an interesting thought because trade wouldn't be restricted to HK but there would still be the availability of cheap labor and materials as well as easy shipping access. Hmm...
