Urban Wolf Near The Door
« on: January 26, 2019, 11:35:07 PM »
Today, a large wolf quickly trotted in to a condo area where I work.  It stopped when it got to the end of the pavement, and sniffed under a tree.  It looked around (probably for one of the million squirrels everyone keeps stuffing with bird suet).  Then, it continued through the grass and paved trail into a greenbelt of 100 condos.  For several moments, I was just five feet from it, with only a low window between us.

I reported it.  It was not a coyote.  It was big, with big feet, rounded ears, a wide snout, and looked just like a big dog.  At first, I thought it was someone's big dog running loose.  Anyhow, it did not appear to notice me.

This is disconcerting because it takes my client a long time to answer the door plus parking is not supposed to be in front of her condo.  So, I walk alone about 140' to wait at a door for a few minutes.  I don't want to over-react, but of course walking that far alone and standing alone in wolf territory doesn't sound safe.  Someone said carry meat.  I can hardly afford my own meat; don't be ridiculous!  Besides, it would smell the meat and then it would never leave me alone.

I guess sometimes there are lone wolves, especially female.  All the people are calling it a coyote, though.  The people say, "We are used to them passing through".  Really?  To kill your cats?  I wish someone had told me sooner.  I had no idea.  Someone said it lives by some train tracks, and I know the only way home then would be through the large 100-plus set of condos.  Or walk right down city streets.

I should have sprayed mace out through the window I saw it in, just to let it know I am a skunk.  But, I didn't have my mace.  Because no one warned me about the wolf.  Maybe another opportunity will arise.  Should I put cayenne on the grass?  Good night.

Ditto on the DON'T CARRY MEAT! You already ARE meat! let's not make it worse. Good Lord, punch that person. If the idea is to throw the animal a chunk of meat while you flee or run inside? That opens another bad can o' worms.

lolol  walking around with fucking meat in your purse JUST IN CASE! ::)

I don't know your location but I would think:

1)  a wolf-dog hybrid that escaped (or let go since many owners can't handle them or various laws in some places prohibit)

2) A Coydog (which is a half-breed of a dog and a coyote.) Bad because have instincts of coyotes but familiarity of dogs.

3) Coywolf (more rare but possible)

4) Wolf

5) Werewolf

6) Direwolf

 ;)

Just blast Duran Duran.   That should scare off any respectable wolf that might be lurking about.

She's in Seattle. They only have grunge wolves there.

Yes, bad idea.  Experts say they would perceive me as poaching their hunting grounds if I had meat.

The Wikipedia List of wolf attacks is informative.  I'm pro gun, but evidently one can kill 13 wolves and still not survive so that has changed my view on automatic weapons.

It was a wolf.  Big, tall, rounded ears, wide snout... A lone wolf.  I guess that happens to females sometimes.  Too much housing development.  Because of a corner, I can't see my client's walkway and door.  I'm going to see if she will let me in through the garage, which is easy to see from the parking, and a little closer too.  There is a closer parking spot, for guests.  But, it is adjacent to the condo of a very ill man and his wife, so my client wants to leave the spot open for his guests.  Although the spot is always empty.

It was beautiful, not grunge.  And, I moved out of King County in July.

Sofia, if you find yourself face to face with that wolf, try the following.  I know it's hard, but try to keep eye to eye contact with it and slowly walk backwards to safety.  Keep looking at its eyes and whatever you do, don't turn your back to it, because that might make it attack you.  If you are watching it and it begins to approach you, act like an angry bear, raise your arms and growl at it.  Again, it would be hard to do, but it should scare the wolf away.  I'm partial to wolves myself, in fact, an Indian used to call me Wolf when I was a little kid.  Are the condos relatively new?  It's sad, but a lot of wildlife are being squeezed out of their native habitat.  I do realize of course, that we all have to live somewhere.  Hopefully, your client will allow you to use the garage for added safety.

REM- Wolves Lower (1982)
Suspicion yourself, suspicion yourself, don't get caught
Suspicion yourself, suspicion yourself, let us out
Wilder lower wolves
Here's a house to put wolves out the door
In a corner garden, wilder lower wolves
House in order, house in order, house in order, house in order
Down there they're rounding a posse to ride

Yes, there has been a lot of development over what used to be farm/watershed land.  If that wolf didn't go through the 100 condo greenbelt, the only other option he'd have to get back to the railroad tracks would be to waltz down a sidewalk or street!

Thanks for telling me about facing the wolf so it knows I am willing to fight, @Rikki Gins.  One lady in Wikipedia survived by walking a few feet backwards to her door, and she survived, but they got aggressive when she turned to open the door.  I've been keeping my car unlocked.  I guess if they think you are a threat, or will fuss, they lose some interest.

Wikipedia's List of wolf attacks in North America really taught me a lot.  Some do run away.

Well, you're a nice wolf.  So was my labrador-silvertip.  But, these things kill for a living all day every day, possibly with spouses and young ones needing food back home.  So, they are fierce.  I only saw one and it looked a little hesitant/out of place, but others at the condo say there are more and when wolves are in a pack, they are very dangerous.

This is all new to me.  I have hiked, biked, lived out in the country, etc... and never before had to think about these things.  Since they are an endangered species (and I can SEE why!), I reported it to Fish and Wildlife, as well as animal control.  It just wanted to eat the fat squirrels everyone feeds at the condos.

@Sofia .  Maybe it was a dog wolf hybrid. My friend who lived in Colorado Springs told me having those hybrids was somewhat of a status symbol there. But when the doggie was too much wolfie they would get rid of them. She took me to a wolf sanctuary outside the Springs - which was an utterly cool experience - and half the animals were wolf hybrids.

One time we went to a dog park in the city. There was a young hybrid there who kept catching and rolling the puppies and little dogs like prey. She didn't hurt any of them. I think that was her idea of "play".  But I kept an eye on her the whole time we were there jic I had to rescue a puppy
