Golden week is a bunch of federal holidays in one week, consisting of Shōwa Day, Children's Day, Greenery Day, and Constitution Memorial Day. This year, they also put the emperor transition during that week. The man who has been emperor of Japan the last 30 years (Akihito) was allowed to abdicate, so his eldest son (Naruhito) is now Emperor, and with that, they change the name of the Era. It went from Heisei 31 to Reiwa 1. They could just use 2019, but that would make it simple for us foreigners. ^^;
