Pots & Pans - Help Request
« on: June 28, 2019, 04:05:27 PM »
Long story short - I caught most of mine on fire as well as melted plastic Tupperware inside of them. I have to blame the moped and the cabinet builders, even though I was the one that technically and UNKNOWINGLY lit the match.

Up until the last few days, I thought you could just go to Walmart and buy a set for $100 and I would be done. I was then instructed by the women in my life that it was time to buy “ADULT cookware.” This lead into a few confusing conversations as well as a lot of research on my part. I wasn’t really that fond of the nonstick stuff that I had. In all actuality it probably needed replacing anyway. I’d like for this to be the last batch of stuff that I buy, with the ability to add to if needed. I’m looking at stainless steel possibly All-Clad. If they last a lifetime then I have no problem shelling out a grand or so for what I think I need but DAMN! I had no idea that stuff cost so much money. Approximately $240 for a 4 qt pot, $150 for a frying pan... Does anyone here use them or have any suggestions that I should look at?

Buy a cast iron chicken fryer. It’s like a Dutch oven with a skillet handle. You can even get them with matching skillets as lids. Good for everything - stove top, oven, campfire.

I have a few all clad pieces and absolutely love them. Most of my stainless is not all clad but some off brand I got somewhere. The trouble with the off brand is they used aluminum rivets.  Those pit and corrode with any acidic food. I’d go all clad and get one additional anodized fry pan and one cast iron skillet with a lid.
Are we having fun yet?

Good idea, I hadn't even thought about that. I do have a 10” or 12” Wagner skillet that was my grandmothers. Still in great shapes and well seasons. I call it my cornbread cooker.

I’m no chef by any means but I do, I think, a good job with certain things. I was reading about the acidity part. I like a lot of tomato based sauces, spaghetti, chili, etcetera. I also saw where the All-Clad is more forgiving with the burning factor because of the way it distributes heat. I’ve got the cast iron skillet but I don’t remember ever seeing a lid for it. It’s a Wagoner anywhere from 70-100+ years old. Any idea if a lid could be found to purchase or would I just be chasing a ghost?

@GravitySucks I've never heard/read you swear before. Feels like finding out there's no Santa.

BEP  No kitchen is complete without the cast iron necessities! THICK based fry pans and pots too! And heal yeah quality cookware is pricey stuff.  Be rid of anything slight, thin, and weightless like Teflon and such.

@KSM when they pulled my teeth they removed the social filter. Now send me those pictures of your wife’s feet that we discussed.

whatever cookware you choose to purchase, include a good old fashioned Wok. once you get the hang of using one, you might never use anything else.

Hahaha  I can't speak to your teeth or lack of but the wife items you refer to are fresh back from the salon where I suspect wine and martinis were enjoyed. Very unprofessional. I'll be complaining and hopefully shutting them down.

+1 That needed to be said. Yes indeed, a WOK!  Remember AC/DC's song, Evil Woks!!!

I like the concept but, the last time I tried cooking on a wok I got a little overzealous. I still can’t figure out how that shrimp landed in my pocket.

I've got the Calaphon stainless and some anodized aluminum pieces as well.  Like them and, if they went bad in 7 years, you can take them fuckers back!
