No spoof.  Of course asking and actually selling are not the same.

Raleigh doesn't handle things well.   120 miles inland - hurricanes can and have hit the area here hard (didn't have power for over a week with Fran) but serious problems are rare. Still if there is a hint of one coming this way, no milk, no bread, no gas. Fuel pipeline disruption? Panic buying - no gas.  We had a little snow once. It was hell.

Nah. I'll hang on to my cash. People are selling bootleg gas at $16 a gallon here so I might need it. @ItsOver Roy is loaded though. I'm sure he can send Doctor hyphenated a check.
Heh, heh... I’d sooner send Jorch Snoorway a check for singing lessons.  Jorch is itching to revive his city invasions.  “Jorch Snoorway - The Comeback Tour.”  A Danheiser/Wagner Entertainment production.

Looks like you’re good for now.

Five million amortized over millions of gallons of gasoline shouldn’t be much but wait until the next holdup.  McGarrett was never one for paying ransom.

That, my friends, is profiteering.  Not Capitalism. This guy should be prosecuted by the local D.A.  Or a couple of Bubbas show up and distribute the largesse, gratis.  Cocksucker.

Indeed but at least the fuel is in appropriate containers.  It could be worse.

He should just sell the cans for $20 and advertise the gas is free.

Hell, he might get $20 just for the spouts on those containers. The new ones look like they suck balls to use.

In pure economic terms, it will be distributed to whoever needs it the most, or has the best use for it.

Here's another example:  storm passes through and destroys an enormous number of homes.

If local hotels leave prices as is, the families that get there first rent several rooms each to spread out in, leaving nothing available for those coming a few hours later.  If the hotels raised rates, people would squeeze together and more would at least have a roof over their head.

Another example:  same storm.

Building materials and electricians/plumbers/contractors/ect continue to charge the same rates.  No extra building supplies or tradesmen come to rebuild.  Increase the prices and rates, and the materials and tradesmen flow in from elsewhere to rebuild.

It's just supply and demand and very short term distribution gyrations.  There won't be many hoarders selling $20 gas, but if it's truly needed at least it's available somewhere.  A few dollars more at the pump will discourage those that don't truly need it, and leave it for those who do.

I had a friend once who got caught short and was going to run out of gas on the way home.  There was only one gas station on a long semi-rural stretch between his office and home, and they sold gas for twice the nornal rate - something like $5.

He pulled over and got a galllon or two, and bitched about it for weeks.  In truth, he was lucky that place was there, even if they had charged him $10 a gallon, it sure beat the hassle of running out of gas out in the middle of nowhere.  In his situation, what's a few extra bucks vs the alturnative.

They keep the leftists happy, though, since they’re very safe and you can’t get the gasoline out to use it.

So, you're saying it's not profiteering?

I'm saying profiteering isn't an economic term, and that the benefit of this particular activity isn't zero.  If someone desperately needs gas, and has no time to wait in line, it's there.

And if it isn't wanted, or if too many punk-ass rednecks do the same, the market will punish them by leaving them with gas and a bunch of gas cans no one buys.

As I think about my friend's case, although it was certainly appropriate to think of Covid-19 as the cause of his death -- it followed just the sort of course identified a year ago in the severest cases -- I recall something that makes me think that even if he hadn't contracted that virus, he'd've been in for serious illness around then anyway.  The oral drugs that'd kept his blood sugar in a passably decent range over the previous 2 years were no longer doing so, and so shortly before the coronavirus infection he'd gone back onto injecting a slow form of insulin called Lantus -- but even that left his blood sugar outrageously high.  So something was happening with his diabetes to make it unresponsive, and I don't know what his course would've been had the virus not stepped in and made it quick.  Elevated blood sugar is known to predispose to the inflammation seen in those severe SARS-CoV2 cases.
