Hey Gunner, this may interest you. I had no idea this place existed until I saw a clip about it on the news tonight. According to wikipedia it held 411 German POWS, 31 German-American internees and 17 Japanese American internees. It is only about 60 miles west of Roswell. It was built in 1855 five years after Texas relinquished the territory to the US and the architecture reflects the Texas influence. https://www.fortstanton.org/ Pretty cool. If I ever get down to Roswell for the UFO festival, I'm going to make a point of stopping by this place.
Yes, I researched this when Dietrich claimed there were Japanese POWs in the area of Roswell. Ft. Stanton was primarily a detention camp for German civilians and Japanese Americans. It had temporary housing and a hospital for Japanese Americans who were being sent to other camps once they were constructed.
There were several camps for the Japanese Americans in New Mexico and they were kept separated from the actual German POWs. The only Japanese POW camps in the US were isolated in California and not further into the US interior. Ft. Stanton was not the same location Dietrich claims held Japanese POWs. That was a different camp housing 4,800 German POWs captured mostly during the Africa Campaign in 1942. They were sent to the US following an agreement with Britain, which was unable to house them.
Although I believe it was wrong for the US to have forced Japanese Americans into camps, in deplorable conditions etc, the Japanese military POWs were never housed with civilians or POWs of different races. They were even separated from other Asians who were captured helping the Japanese.
