I got to play Ian Gillan for about 20 seconds in a German documentary. They sent me to Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin where the engineer slapped up a Neumann U 47 and then casually mentioned that that was the mic Bowie used to record Heroes. That mic was a monster. Can you remember, remember my name? 

Great answer. I have toiled contemplated purchasing one of those for years now. They're still under 5K..  I notice there are now the U 47 FET Collector's edition. Not sure why but this worries me. Are they the same as the original? I want an original in mint condition that has been broken in. That said, perhaps whatever they put out now may be just as good as what you may have sung into for 20 minutes.  Years ago I had a 58 from 1981 (my very first mic) and did a so-called shootout with a 58 from 2017 and the sound of the 17 was not as crisp/clean as the 81 - or so it seemed to me. MIC paranoia? Perhaps.  Question is,  do you think they are made to the same standard as the one you sang into?

For broadcast purposes, I've never found anything I like better than a bone stock Electro-Voice RE20 with an old Symetrix 528E processor. I tried the Shure SM7(B) (Michael Jackson recorded the Thriller album on an SM7) and countless other dynamic mics. Condensers are ridiculous for broadcast, but Stern uses a Neumann TLM 103. They used to have him on a larger Neumann but switched to the 103 because it covers less of his face for video.

I have always wanted an Electro-Voice RE20, and they do seem to be the most popular standard in broadcasting. Alas.. I am not a broadcaster so having that mic would be just for the sake of having it. I think Howard started using the Neumann when he started at Sirius in 06. I could be wrong on that. He's nuts about his compression level, I know that. Wish I knew what those levels were.

Howard TV crew did not work for him, they worked for indemand.
The contract ended so they got assigned to other productions for the company.

You have to accept the fact that they have chosen this path.
