@Bart Ell @Walks_At_Night @KSM - I'm thinking of dumping windows.  Do you have any experience with a good linux distribution for multimedia and music production?

I do not as I never took the Linux plunge.

I have no direct experience with such things but the internet says that Ubuntu Studio is a good choice for that type of work.
It will come with an option to use a regular release or a long term release.  The regular release will have newer stuff in it but you'll have to move off it like every six months.  The long term release might lag in features but will be supported for a few years.  The internet also mentions a Ubuntu Studio Audio Configuration tool.  You'll want to look into that as it seems it might let you fine tune the kernel for low-latency settings.  The kernel is the guts of the system and low-latency would allow your audio stuff to run smoother [in theory].  Probably what you want to try

If you just want a simple distro that kind of has a Mac look and feel then Elementary OS might be a good choice.  It is simple to use but you might be limited in the software packages that are available for it.

My favorite distro is Mint - its what I run at the house here.

I've heard good things about Solus - I've not tried it though - it is supposed to make things easier

You can also cruise over to Distro Watch - the do a good job of giving you the latest skinny on various distros

Ubuntu has been my mainstay for a good part of this century. All open source apps are free and I assume adaptable for any distro. Ubuntu can be previewed before actually installing.

Thanks.  I've read about Ubuntu Studio and considered it. I have Linux Mint running  very well on an HP computer I bought used that I think came with Win7.  I've been pretty happy with it for fiddling. I've got to get my head around how to distinguish between multiple hard drives.  The reason for multiples is with recording audio or video its better to have the audio on one drive and the program running on another.  Though with solid state drives that may have changed.

The cache should be on a different drive.

Bart,
Does this represent latent homosexual tendencies or everyone is a little gay? The last one sounds a little Freudian. Follow up question- how do you feel about being sexually harassed?

I feel like everyone should have side bets on what they think you’ll say.
There was a little girl,
            Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
            When she was good,
            She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.
