Cicadas in the Pacific Northwest are annual in nature, meaning that they get it all done (egg, larvae, insect, breed, deposit next years eggs in tree bark) in a year, unlike their more famous cousins back east that bury themselves in the ground and wait for a number of years before emerging topside, en masse.
