Also, @PB you are going to need to prove your point about brown.

Well, it's subjective of course.  Since I only have first hand knowledge of men's wear - and, heh, probably shouldn't dig my hole much deeper - here's what I think:

Brown shoes, belts, pants, suits, and coats for men are a terrible look.  If not terrible, then far inferior to black (shoes and belt), and light grey, dark grey, charcoal, black, and dark blue for coats, pants and suits (and black and the faded [light] blue only for Levi's).

Shirts, tie (ugh!), trim can be in any color including, I suppose, browns (and be careful with tans and most yellows too).

But that's just me.

PS Looking back on the last few pages, I'm not seeing a lot of brown women's clothes...

Maybe I was misled by old fashioned women (Mom & Grandma) but I was told brown shoes during the day and black shoes in the evening.  I wore what I wanted anyway but it always stuck with me.  If I "dress up" I wear black shoes.  Plus I don't wear brown pants, shirts, or ties.  I have a brown sweater, but that's it.  However I did see a suit ensemble that was a deep chocolate brown that looked pretty good.  Nonetheless, like @PB I'm not a fan of brown clothing, etc.

All right boys. I'll do a post on this tonight or tomorrow, I def have some thoughts on this. @ShayP you nailed it IMO- black is formal brown is not.

My tv default channel is TCM. When I first turn on the tv, there it is. Yesterday I caught part of "Woman of the Year"(1942) with Katherine Hepburn. Today it was "Designing Woman"(1957) with Lauren Bacall. Both great movies. And the clothes!

Ms. Hepburn. Wish I could have gotten a full length of her walking in the polka dot. Hangs beautifully

Hey TL.  You know that's right! LOL. Like you,  TCM is my default station of choice.  I was really pissed off at Comcast last month when I turned on the tv and TCM was no longer available.  Comcast had put them up another tier and I had to pay an extra $5 a month for it.  I told their rep that really the only reason I had cable was because of TCM.  Comcast is evil.  Their day is coming to an end.  I'll be able to get TCM soon without having to bother with that evil cable company.

I've been thinking about this and I think you're right @PB . Brown had a moment in 2017/2018 but in general is consigned to outerwear. Looking at men's fashion specifically it seems like you all have a lot more rules:( A man who wears a brown suit will be noticed, which is often not what one is going for when wearing suiting! Also, I think that brown is harder to match than black or navy so not as versatile and you really need to understand your own coloring and undertones to do it well. Also, almost universally, brown was so unpopular with major labels that when they did have the color it was usually of cotton or linen fabric - of course meaning for hot dry (desert) or hot humid (linen) climates and was closer to tan/beige. Another interesting thing I noticed is that most designers don't consider tan/beige to be "brown" instead they called it neutral or natural.

I'm going to make a guess though and say that brown will be back. It's starting to sneak back into the interior design world and I think fashion will follow- we'll see in a few years!

Most of the brown suiting that was in wool or wool/silk (hello sharkskin- LOVE it) combination was in interesting shades of brown that really read as gray or taupe. I thought that was interesting but makes since as some men will look better in the warmer tending brown (brown undertones: yellow, orange, green, pink) than the cooler grays (gray undertones: blue, green, purple). Here's some taupe/gray-ish suites:

No socks? And those shoes are awful regardless.  He should be thrown off a bridge.

The tie sucks too and handkerchief is wrong...IMO.  Personal taste of course.  ;)

Oh.  The shoes really are awful.

Historical tidbit. In the famous Nixon/Kennedy televised debate. Kennedy wore, I believe a navy blue suit with authority. Tall, composed, well-spoken. Nixon wore a brown suit. Sweaty, nervous, sneaky looking. That was the death of the brown suit

Even Dot's choices are a very grayed brown. Stupid sockless hipster. He'll never win the debate
