Nice!  On the other hand, The Andromeda Strain, is a very watchable movie.

Okay, I’ve started reading The Andromeda Strain, I haven’t seen the movie yet…

The old man they saved from Piedmont was drinking “the pink lady” or “squeeze”, which turns out to be sterno!?!?! Everyone was just carrying on like it wasn’t super shocking and I was like WT actual fuck? Who does this? Why does he have nicknames for doing this? Why does no one think this is insane?

So, I looked it up. And found this article: https://hiddencityphila.org/2017/09/skid-row-deaths-of-1963-echoes-todays-opioid-crisis/ apparently this was a thing? Has anyone else heard of this?
There was a little girl,
            Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
            When she was good,
            She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.

Lots going on here.

This is like the people who set up elaborate squirrel torture/feeding stations but for hot dogs. https://www.tiktok.com/@newtypatooty/video/7520338233008360735

Drunks, at least in the 70s, drank all manner of stuff.  I mean the drunks who spent a considerable part of their lives in the county jail - not the middle class alcoholics. Sterno was common.  I knew a drunk named Pancake who lived most of his life as a jail trustee washing the sheriff's cars who was famous among his peers for being able to "pour the alcohol out from under Vitalis" - whatever that means. Yes, the hair tonic.  Of course that kind of alcohol further deteriorated their brains.
Merry Christmas - Nice things, and posts, are nicer than nasty things.

Geez. They could've made a movie about that guy. Pancake you say? I recently did a story on a guy named Pancake who beat his father.  Not far from you actually.

Hello.  I hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving.  An early "Merry Christmas" to you all.  It's been a bit of a rough year.  I lost a very dear colleague in the spring.  She was one of those people you value when down in the trenches of difficult work.  One of the finest people I ever knew.  My brother-in-law passed in June, way too young to die at 53.  Three weeks later my mom passed.  I travelled back to MT and spent a week with her in the hospital before she passed.  Even though I used vacation time and bereavement leave, I lost my job shortly after coming home.  I'm nearing retirement age (10 years I hope) and I have NEVER been let go or laid off in my life.  Loyalty in the workplace is long gone it seems.  Yeah, it's been a bit of a bitch.  BUT, life moves on.  I went back to a previous employer and am settling in just fine.  I get a couple days off over Christmas and in reflecting on the past, I told my wife I'd like to revisit some childhood memories and watch a few classic Christmas movies.  A Christmas Story, It's a Beautiful Life, and A Charlie Brown Christmas.  I was curious about how others viewed Charlie Brown Christmas and was on YT when I found this:

WARNING:  Adult themes and language, DO NOT WATCH AT WORK
WARNING:  Maybe DON'T watch this if you hold Charlie Brown Christmas dear
Do watch it if you like to be slightly amused and shocked!

This is wild. My brain can’t even process it.

I’m sorry to hear about your difficult year. I hope 2026 treats you better and is a year of new beginnings.

That video was dark. I liked it.

Oh man.  So sorry to hear this.  Glad you were able to secure a new gig - not easy these days.  2025 is winding down - 2026 will be a fresh start and hope it will be stellar year for you and yours.

I enjoyed the dudes in the background in the club doing their same funky chicken as always.  LoL

Man that is a lot for one year. Sounds like enough for 10 or more years actually. Like WAN said 2026 is a fresh start and I too am glad to hear you landed your old job back.

The pendulum always swings back the other way so hopefully a great Christmas and happy New Year is yours.

Cheers to you BJM.

Hi Dot, I only just now saw your post. Interestingly, Sterno was at first called "Sterno Canned Heat," and yes, that's where the 60s band Canned Heat got their name. They were into early blues music and were especially taken with a 1928 song called  "Canned Heat Blues," by Tommy Johnson.

Maybe close out the year with a nice burger down at the Five Guys?

Not a bad idea. I'll stop shaving now.
