I'm a bit miffed. Yesterday, I had to call in sick to work for the first time, and of the five I tried to contact to cover my shift, only one person got back and said they weren't able to. The other four just didn't reply at all... The manager ended up asking one person to stay late a couple of hours, and just worked with the people they had for the evening. Even though I tried to do what I was supposed to, I feel like I caused a lot of unnecessary trouble....

I'm glad I don't get sick often....

As you should be - Miffed!  I assume your employer knows you tried to get your shift covered. And you said it yourself that you did what you were supposed to do, so how on Earth is it you feel like you've caused Any trouble - just by doing the right thing!?  I would hire you just for feeling the way you do, even though it's insane ;)  You're probably a great employee.  Can you remotely quote a flooring plan based just on a PDF and then potentially barter with the potentially unreasonable bastard without loosing your cool?  You're hired!!  :)

Considering the employees I contacted were ones suggested by my manager, as they know everyone's schedules/availability, they do know I tried. Tried three different ways too- our employee app, texting and calling...

As for the flooring plan...I have zero experience on that one. Have you tried what the coding masters do and getting a rubber duck to yell at and possibly throw across the room?
