I remember a time when lowering the flag to half staff was an unusual event. The relative rarity of the act gave it gravitas.

Now, they lower the flag for anything. It doesn't even need to be for the death of a person. It can be any tragic event. If that fuckin sub popped in US waters, you can bet your ass that the flag gets hauled. That fuckin flag is going up and down like PB's zipper at a bathhouse.

Point is, these things of gravitas are subject to dilution. And that's how I am reacting to this relentless need to put charitable bumper stickers on everything in sports. People used to recoil in horror at the thought of a major sports player looking like a formula one car. I suppose that's not on principle; it's based upon deciding that something merits a waiver because it benefits a movement with a larger base of beneficiaries than the stockholders of a conglomerate.

Actually it turns out the money the Canadiens raised from auctioning off the jerseys they wore for 10 minutes during warmups directly helped hundreds of families every year.

It turns out that, in an informed world, the money went to Leucan.
