@KSM Yep. Tired of these ugly smelly critters.

That one was only about 100 pounds.

The biggest one I have shot so far was about 450. First time ever I was a bit scared in the woods.

Yeah, 450!  That'll scare. But at the end of the day, it's your land, dammit and they gotta learn!  ;D

Sad thing is, I know people who think they could just walk up and pet a wild hog  :o  ::)

EDIT  What did you shoot the 450 with?  One clean shot?

The really big ones I just haul out back to feed the coyotes and buzzards. I went back where I dumped that big one two weeks later and couldn’t find any sign of it. I eventually found the skull about 200 yards into the woods. This one was prime eating size, so I kept it alive all day trying to find someone that wanted free meat. But with everyone getting tax returns and stimulus checks nobody was interested in doing the work required to field dress it and process it. I dispatched it with a rifle I had been wanting to try out and dumped it about 3000 yards back in my woods. Haven’t heard the coyotes yet, so they haven’t found it yet.

The stainless steel lever action 357 magnum carbine shoots really nice.

We have those things around here, tearing up entire hillsides at night digging for grubs.

They're supposed to be highly aggressive, and pretty dangerous with those razor sharp tusks.  It's about the only animal around here I haven't seen hiking and mountain bike riding.

@KSM I was in my deer stand at dark when she and about a dozen smaller ones came out of the creek bed and headed to my feeder. I had my favorite rifle with me. An old Remington 30.06 which I customized by floating the barrel and painted the stock a camouflage color. The first shot disabled her and she spun around over and over under the feeder. I was worried she was going to run off into the thicket so I shot a second time. But that is when she started spinning the other direction and did manage to get off into the thicket. I waited in my tree stand for at least 30 minutes making sure I didn’t hear her or any of her brood tearing through the woods. I headed back to my camp to get my tractor and my daughter to go look for her. I drove around and couldn’t find her. I got off the tractor and told my daughter that if anything happened to me NOT TO GET OFF THE TRACTOR!!! DRIVE THE TRACTOR TO THE NEIGHBORS AND CALL 911!!

I found her dead right where I thought she would be in the thicket. It was all I could do to get her drug out and into the bucket of the tractor. My 30.06 is not fancy, but over the last 40 years it has earned it’s “1S1K” brand I labeled it with.

I actually don’t hunt for meat anymore. I run my feeders all year and am always ready, willing and able to teach youngsters how to hunt, but killing animals does not bring me joy. I still sit in my stands several times each year to watch the wildlife but feral hogs are the only thing I dispatch. And it doesn’t come easy. Oh the shooting is easy for me. Sight picture. Breath control. Aim small.  Trigger control. These things come naturally for me. But ending an animal’s life has always come with mixed emotions.

@PB The reason I put this trap out there is because of how much of a nuisance they have become. Two months ago I was taking my girlfriend for a walk through the woods. We had just walked past one of my feeders and it went off. About a dozen hogs larger than this one came running towards us to get to the corn. I had my pistol so I jumped in front of my girlfriend and just fired a couple of warning shots. They retreated but I could still hear them in the thicket. They tear up every square inch of where they decide to root looking for grubs or acorns depending on the time of year. I have a creek that crosses my property and it’s a pretty deep ravine. They bed down in there during the day and do most of their damage at night. Last fall I was just walking stealthily through the woods to go sit in one of my ladder stands. I was wearing moccasins so I was as silent as a human can be in the woods. A boar about 300 pounds crossed about 30 feet in front of me. I wasn’t armed because it was midday and I was just out for a stroll. I screamed and it just stood there. They don’t have good eyesight. But an excellent sense of smell. I guess I was downwind because it just stood there. I started waving my arms and yelling at it, and it decided to just walk away the way it was headed. Not sure what would have happened if it decided to charge me. I used to be able to run pretty fast. Not anymore.

I still take my walks in the woods but I make sure I always have my walking stick if I am alone now. If I am with someone else I carry my pistol. I’m glad I had it when they charged towards the feeder. I could have shot one or two, but didn’t really want my girlfriend to see me kill anything. I knew the warning shots would make them scatter.

So, I've been driving a Prius a lot lately. I get over 61 miles per gallon on it by just driving the speed limit. I'm not an asshole about driving the speed limit either. I stay in the number four or number three lane, I don't clog up the merge lanes I will speed up if it's jam-packed and nobody can pass me as far over to the right as I am.

What I find hilarious is, even just today, I had cars that stayed behind me even with open lanes to their left. So I'm toodling along at 65 mph and some Chevy sedan will be behind me nearly tailgating me for miles on end. In this particular case the freeway expanded to a couple more lanes and I pulled over one laying to the right. Then this car who's been doing 65 right on my tail for the last four or five miles suddenly hits 90 mph passing me.

Are they fucking drunk? What is wrong with them that they couldn't just change lanes and pass me on a clear bright day?  I am damn proud of my 60+MPG driving habits. Not even a quarter of a tank gone and I've gone something like 230 miles.  Fluid dynamics!
When my Uncle first taught me to drive on Californian freeways he said: Get into the 2nd lane and drive the speed limit, whenever you look in your rearview it'll look like the parting of the Red Sea backwards but you won't have to worry about passing or merging until your exit. At 16 I thought that was very funny but it did take the stress out of driving!

It means you have arrived. Sit down. Have a bite to eat. There's no where else to go.
