I recently wanted to make a donation to a worthy local branch of an organization. I wanted this donation to benefit this specific location and not to be shared with others.

No one would agree to it so the donation was rescinded. The reason I didn't want my donation going to other parties in that group was because they don't know how to handle the money and they created roadblocks for a massive charity concert I wanted to do for them 7 or 8 years ago. Why reward people who are dicks?

After being given the initial answer that they would not comply with my condition, I replied that it was because of my concerns about them and I brought up my previous efforts that were sabotaged (through the moving of goal posts and untenable conditions for the show to go on).

All of those people are still on staff and I took the opportunity to include them on the distribution list for the email.

Is there such a thing as philanthropic trolling? I'm sure there is. I'm sure there's lots of people who donate to charities with very strict conditions about what they can or cannot say and all sorts of other stuff.

I did a project for a non-profit, and would never give money to one.  Unless it was a very small local organization that could convince me their overhead was very low and nearly all the funds would go to the cause and not to their ''executives''.

It was disgusting watching them set up and fund massive pension plans for their top several ''executives'' and board members - not to mention their pay - bloating up the staff, and calling up little old ladies for their Social Security checks.  I ended up leaving before the project was finished.

Yeah, ''non-profit'' doesn't mean the executives and board members aren't profiting greatly.  It doesn't mean the other teacher's pets aren't making bank.  It doesn't mean they're not flying first class. 

Like politicians, they don't really have any skills or expertise for the most part other than entrenching themselves in their positions - if they actually had the talent they'd be running for-profit companies.  Not to paint with too broad of a bush of course, just my anecdotal experience, but be careful who you give money to.  I can't even imagine what the NGOs are like.

When I do stuff like that, although it's mainly Asia, I use the kiosk at the post office. They usually have a minimum $1 charge thing which shouldn't be a problem, but you can type in the postal code and it generates a stamp with the exact postage on it.

Maybe it would be a good idea to buy some international 0.5 Oz stamps...
