This daffodil plant was planted many years ago in a part of EllGab Garden Central that has since fallen into disuse. Last year the bulb sent up three flowers, but only one this year. I wrote about it back then:
https://ellgab.com/index.php?topic=359.msg509756#msg509756

Only just recently did I attempt to identify what type of daffodil it is. Turns out it was a bulb developed back in the 1950s and its name is Ice Follies.

Is it odiferous? Or is that only narcissus?
There was a little girl,
            Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
            When she was good,
            She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad she was horrid.

Some of the older varieties of daffodils are odiferous while many of the newer ones aren't. The Ice Follies daffodil shown above has a sweet, pleasant aroma, especially during a warm day.

They really are absurdly happy looking flowers

The plum trees have blossomed out back. The blossoms are beginning to fade away and drop to the ground.

Here is a potful  of dianthus plants. Two of them, actually. They arrived here in the EllGab - Pacific Northwest Garden late last summer.

I was wandering around the garden section at Kroger when I came across a display of what can best be described as misfit plants. (Perhaps they came from the island that those toys lived on.) There were several varieties of plants and they had been discounted in price, and placed on death row. Meaning that they were no longer being watered, and they looked it. Anyway, there were two red dianthus plants that looked as though they could be revived, if cared for properly, so I purchased one. I took it home and put it in a pot and then noticed that there was still room for another one, so I went beck to the store the next day and bought the other one.

Well, the two of them bounced back and they were in full bloom clear up to autumn's first frost. They didn't freeze though, because I picked the pot up and brought it into the house. After that it was placed outside during daylight hours and brought indoors at night...pretty much all winter long. It was worth the effort because when spring rolled around, the were covered with bright red flowers. The plants are doing just fine now, and they are still flowering.

Turning the compost pile and saw some movement.  This big bugger came slithering out of the muck and gave me a start for sure.

Is that a ratsnake, WAN? I've read about them but have never seen one because they don't live in the west. I surely would love to have one in the garden, though. Any kind of snake would be welcome here, the nonvenomous ones, of course. I'm too far into town to see any, though I do have a salamander hanging out here.

That is a close-up shot. It's actually a fairly tiny thing.

I believe it is a ratsnake.  I know it wasn't a copperhead and fairly sure it wasn't a cottonmouth so that was a relief.  I've seen gobs of copperheads here but never a cottonmouth...however they are around.  Don't want any part of rattlesnakes like they have out west - blech.

Don't want to hurt him so I've got to use care in digging into the compost with the pitch fork.

That's a cute little guy you have there - hopefully he thrives.
