Yeah. Read up on Water Buffalo as a result. Apparently they end up in pet food under the term "Buffalo". This lead to a Truth in Buffalo Labeling Act passed by Congress to address the situation.

Back in the late 80s, while in the Philippines I had a pair of custom boots made out of water buffalo hide.  The boot guy told me they would wear like iron, water buffalo hide was tough.  Long story short, he was right, I had them for nearly thirty years.  On the down side, for whatever reason they absolutely reeked when they got wet. I would have to set them outside in the breeze for a couple days to dry and air away the smell.  Also, I have no hair on either leg from my ankles up to about 2" below my knees.  The hide eroded it.
