I think there is some nasty type of "beer" made from milk or cactus the various natives from Mexico and south made? But pre-European (not distilled as they do now.) But I figure the Finns would bring their own on their conquests. And Bill from Madison might agree. Not sure why our N.American Indians didn't brew stuff? I guess tobacco and/or weed was sufficient?

Yeah, the question of fermentation in N. America is an interesting one. They had corn and, in the Great Lakes at least, rice, so it wasn't from a want of starch.
