With helmets and without goons, hockey just ain’t what it was.

Know what goons like Todd Ewen, Wade Belak and Derek Boogaard miss?
Being alive.

Sorry to seem callous but there is an inherent risk in everything one does.

The first NHL game I went to (San Jose), the Cup was on display - very prominently in the front entrance beer and calorie purchasing area.

Apparently it travels during the season.

True...BUT, I'll personally take that risk if I'm able.

Nope.  These guys didn't.  If it's part of my job description and I accept it (i.e. goon) then I'll do it for the game and the $$$ even knowing what the future may hold for me.

Honestly, who would do it for free?  Not sure where you are going with that.  I know this much...I have some reheated burritos in the microwave and some hot sauce on the table.  Texas Pete mind you.  ShayP (and his colon in 2 hours) are getting busy!  :D

Jack Johnson did thanks to his parents!

Quote
On November 20, 2014, the Columbus Dispatch reported that Johnson had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, claiming just $50,000 in assets against $10 to $15 million in estimated debts. Shortly after signing his first major contract, a seven-year, $30.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Kings, Johnson granted his mother, Tina Johnson, power of attorney over all his finances. Over the next few years, Tina and Johnson's father, John II, took out several large, high-interest loans against Johnson's future earnings, a lending practice known as "monetizing," and spent the money on homes, cars and travel

It seems absurd to restart the NHL and NBA seasons.  The players are no longer in late season form, there's little connection now to the seasons of several months ago.  They should just call it and be done.

Besides, to protect us from ourselves apparently we'll never again be able to go out for dinner, go to a movie or concert, or to a sporting event.  In that case, what do we need players making 10s if not 100s of millions of dollars for, or billionaire owners ripping us off on t-shirt sales?

I remember that.  Holidays must have been awkward.
