Today in 490 BC the Battle of Marathon occurred, where a small Athenian force defeated the Persian Empire.

In 1217, French prince Louis & English King Henry III sign a peace treaty.

There are only 110 days remaining until the end of the year.

There's a possibility that the new IPhones will be announced today.

If you're in Chicago today:
Free Baroque concert - https://www.baroque.org/Seasons/2018-2019/baroque-in-the-park
Or, you could catch a free movie - https://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/movies-parks
(Space Jam , and Justice League are playing)
The world music festival is also happening - https://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/dca/supp_info/world_music_festival.html/

If you're in Germany, you could always investigate he 9th Conference on the Mechanical Behavior of Salt (SaltMech IX) - it will take place from September 12 – 14, 2018 at the BGR in Hannover, Germany.  https://www.saltmech.com/

And for budding - or experienced - programmers, the .NET conference (streaming and local) starts today.  https://www.dotnetconf.net/        ;)

Edit: Almost forgot, if you dig air races, the National Championship Air Races are happening in Reno, today through Sunday.

Birthdays

1888      Maurice Chevalier, singer, dancer, pedo and actor.
1913      Jesse Owens, track and field athlete who won four medals at the Berlin Olympics in 1936.
1931      George Jones, country singer.

Just kidding about Chevalier but what can you say after hearing him sing that song, Thank Heaven For Little Girls?
"Supernatural, perhaps. Baloney, perhaps not. There are many things under the sun." - Bela Lugosi as Dr. Vitus Verdegast in The Black Cat.

I purposely don't clean my ears before certain concerts. Disgusting, admittedly as was a strange thread on BG about Q-Tips n such. Anyhow, Praise BE, it helps and semi-often after some, esp if the show is in small venue or aucoustic metal shed, essentially, like good SA places and used to be in Austin. I will find wax issue "solved", less ringing, in morning tho quick to not show or have found. Ha. Cause disgusting but effective and I'm, secretly, proud. Self-help medicine n better than evil q-tips or those scam ear candles because also see the bands.
I like the thinking there. With regards to ear candles are they really a scam? I'm on the fence with those. Wish I knew more because it's a real process to go through with those things.

I have never done ear candles but heard a scam. Plus dont want fire near my ears. Q-tips are bad for cleaning, can make work. Slayer or Motorhead works better. Or lacking that a syringe, warm water, and a weak peroxide solution (sold in stores) but be careful. I am not a doctor. Getting them clean by staff at ENT doc works also but insurance or costs etc.

Ear candles are a complete scam and there is nothing wrong with Q-tips unless you have the shakes or lack coordination.  I've been using them for 40+ years and my ears still have that new car smell.  Plus my belly button is pristine.

Were you in my class at S.O.A.?  We got all kinds of neat tools to aid in Interrogation.
One of my former news directors was an MP in Vietnam. He told me about his neat interrogation tool - a Huey.
Merry Christmas - Nice things, and posts, are nicer than nasty things.

Still risky. I have been recommended this by doctors: https://www.debrox.com/ it's available over the counter pretty much everywhere.
It dissolves the wax and breaks it apart. I've had to go and have my ears cleaned out by doctors because the wax became impacted, and since using it that hasn't happened since.

Also, between you and me, it kinda feels like an orgasm when the drops slide up against the ear drum  ;).

I fake them.
Trying to come up with a "when Harry met Sally" joke like "I'll have what she's having" but it's not formulating well and I cannot seem to muster it Mr.

I give myself an A for effort though

Ha! It is, in a way, I blame being to able to hear things in my periphery and other ear, who happened to some cute nurses and a pharma salesgql who likely was an ex-UK cheerleader (that really is a 'thing.)
On a more nasty note: it can be crazy to look in sink or tray when ears cleaned properly. Maybe make a candle?

Similar feeling if you fold you ear shut and run a vibrator over it and behind it.  Just don't panic when your ear sounds like a big seashell for a few minutes afterward.  For people prone to ear infections, a few minutes of this helps.  If your head got too cold or you didn't dry your hair, this also helps prevent infection.
