Been listening to other unknowns on various platforms and they suck in a way that not only inspires me, but also makes me feel pretty optimistic. They have ZERO for delivery and their voices are in most cases not all that great. <being nice. Top that with ZER0 character in these seemingly vapid individuals. At this point I am like the gorgeous fat chick who if she lost 50 LBs would have to fight off all themenwomen with a stick.

Sorry, @KSM . I have been distracted. Earlier this week, somebody let go of a shopping cart uphill from my pretty new and mint condition SUV. Those fucking assholes. I've also had a few other things come up. I also just put a ton of money into a bank that has recently been downgraded two or three times in the week. The bank hid the fact by burying their bank name under three different layers. Ultimately all owned by NYCB.

I was a child in the 70s! I now know so much more thanks to Art Bell bumper music...
That's an interesting comment, and explains some of the things I've heard from others over the years. Maybe they haven't ever listened to or explored the pop music from earlier than their teens. From someone who remembers great albums coming out seemingly weekly all thru the 70s - and not just rock - things really tailed off in the 80s, and from the 90s on it's been overwhelmingly dreadful with a few points of light here and there. There's a reason geezers from that era still sell out venues. The Jerry Garcia Band is still going strong, with a variety of lead guitarists sitting in. You should check out more of the 70s. And 60s, 50s, the big band sounds of the 30s and 40s, some 20s ragtime...
My take on Art Bell's bumpers was that he took snippets in order to set a mood, not try to introduce people to the best music out there. I wouldn't sit around and listen to the records most of his bumpers came from, but those snippets were right for the show. Did you know Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings?

The only way I can tell what song II s playing in a crowded, noisy room, is to hear the bass line and the changes. Used to drive my ex crazy that I could tell what song was playing in a noisy restaurant but couldn't understand a word she said.

Motorcycle Guy hopped off the bike and went up to the Mini-Van hooting and hollering. Mini-Van Guy got out and squared up with Motorcycle Guy. Although much smaller, he dropped Motorcycle Guy like a rock. Mrs. Walks wanted to know how a little dude could wipe a big dude like that. As we learned from Heater, it's pronounced ''ippa''.
The way I understand it, beer is made from barley malt and a blend of hops (and water and yeast of course - plus whatever other crap they want to throw in. A wheat beer substitutes wheat for some of the barley. Bud, Miller, Coors, etc are made with rice). Different varieties of hops are more and less bitter, the comparative sweetness of the malt is supposed to balance out the bitterness of the hops, and different flavors of beer are supposed to be on a scale from less bitter (say a stout, like Guiness, pilsners, etc) to something hoppier (an IPA). But even IPAs, towards the more bitter end of the scale, are supposed to be balanced - they're not supposed to end up being a nasty, bitter swill. It's not always easy getting the recipe right, and especially the precise steps, temperatures, and timing in the brewing process, and there are only a few that really do. Add to that the dumb he-man types who think it's cool to drink the nasty shit, so of course brewers will cater to that purposefully.
Around here Lagunitas puts out a very good balanced IPA. Drakes here in Berkeley has a double IPA called Denoganizer that comes in at 9.75% and still manages to be a good beer while camouflaging that alcohol taste. Those are a couple of my go-to IPAs, I'm sure there are other breweries around that put a decent IPA out. Same deal with barleywines and other flavors on the hoppier end of the scale.
KSM alluded to it in the podcast, British sailors would get scurvy from a lack of vitamin C on long sea voyages, so they made beer with extra hops to provide the vitamin C. So many of those trips were to and from India, thus India pale ales, IPAs.
Is that where the term 'limey' came from, carrying limes on the ships for the vitamin C?
You've got a few different things going on here, but some of what you're saying is true.
Some stouts can be bitter, but yes generally speaking the roasting has been done well and the malt is the foreward profile making them more sweet than some. Most Barleywines are not hopforward because that is not the style, they are malt foreward and sometimes barrel aged to boot. If you looked at the recipe, sure it would have a good amount of hops, but it has to for other reasons not because your pallet would think:hops -but because barleywines can be overly sweet and they need to be balanced with hops.
Pilsners are a different beast because they are by definition not ales but Lagers. It's only comparable to a sliver of Ales.
Also, I'm pretty sure Coors does not use rice. They brew in the German style and brew a Lager.
KSM likes sweeter beers in general and I think he and you are conflating some things together that don't exactly work.
I picked that all up from friends who brew their own and talk about it all the time. Probably tuned some of it out.

Pictured above and heard in my latest is the Electro Voice AKA EV re320. It is the little brother to the most famous broadcast mc of all time, the EV re20. Also, the EV re27nd. I have all three. They are dynamic cardioids that come across as condensers without all the extra room noise of actual condensers.
